“Americans desperately want to lose weight- no doubt about that. Our failure to do so is certainly not for lack of trying. Collectively, we spend about $59 billion per year on weight-loss programs and products. We invest an enormous about of time and energy on our weight-loss goals. Despite these efforts, we just keep getting fatter and fatter. Until the very recent leveling off, we had several decades of unprecedented weight gain. As the national waistline grew, so did the bottom line of the weight-loss industry.”
-Linda Bacon, Ph.D
Decades of seeking control of her body size and shape included graduate degrees in physiology, psychology, and exercise metabolism (with a specialty in nutrition, body image, and eating disorders), spiritual studies in India, and finally finding relief from the preoccupation with food and obsession with managing how she looks. Psychotherapist, nutrition researcher and professor Linda Bacon wrote Health at Every Size, relaying the freedoms she has painstakingly discovered.
Maybe you’ve heard about the Health at Every Size (HAES) movement. If you haven’t read the book, join us in reading and discussing it together.
This is not a support or therapy group, though it will be therapeutic. This book discussion group is open to you, your colleagues, your clients, your family or your friends- anyone who is interested in the idea of freedom from worrying about food or how their body looks.
***All who are interested, please contact Kathryn Gates with questions, or to indicate interest. Group will begin soon, once a headcount is obtained!
