    Sensible Divorce:

A More Amicable Path for Separating Couples

    PRESENTER

    Michelle Edwards, PhD

    PRESENTATION SUMMARY

Most couples would like a sensible divorce but are not aware of alternatives to costly litigation. Attendees will learn about the different options available to separating couples, and the focus will be on divorce mediation as an alternative to traditional litigation. Divorce mediation is a preferred alternative for both spouses and children because it creates less animosity, costs less, and sets spouses on a path for effective future communication. The costs of high conflict divorce will be explored, as well as the benefits of couples choosing a more amicable path.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Learn the costs, both emotional and financial, of high conflict divorce on families
    • Identify different legal options available to divorcing couples
    • Learn about community resources available to divorcing couples
    • Learn the benefits of mediation for separating couples to help reduce conflict and provide a platform for future communication, especially when children are involved
