ABOUT US

We are the Austin Chapter of the Texas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (TAMFT), a division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). We serve Travis and the surrounding counties of Williamson, Burnet, Bastrop, Hays, and Blanco.

The Austin AMFT mission is to unite students, service agencies, and emerging and seasoned professionals to promote the licensure of marriage and family therapists, clinical systemic thinking, and to distinguish the field of Marriage & Family Therapy as unique and beneficial to the greater Austin community.

The Profession of Marriage and Family Therapy

Licensed MFTs focus on understanding client symptoms and interaction patterns within their existing environment. LMFTs can work with an individual, a couple, and an entire family while holding the lens of understanding the broader socio-cultural systems.

This approach is based on the research and theories that individuals are social creatures and do not exist in a vacuum. Therefore, LMFTs hold a therapeutic view that it is important to attend to the individual and family’s larger systems – community, school, work etc. – rather than individual pathology.

LMFTs offer treatment for a variety of clinical issues including, but not limited to:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • stress
  • spirituality
  • relationship issues including divorce
  • remarriage
  • co-parenting
  • life transitions

  • relationship enhancement
  • child-parent relations
  • childhood and adolescent behavioral and emotional disorders
  • substance abuse
  • grief and loss
  • trauma
  • sexual and domestic violence
