     How to Build Multicultural Awareness

    and Sensitivity in Your Practice

    PRESENTER

    Alejandra Cervantes, LPC-A

    PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

When working in private practice or in an agency, it is very common to encounter clients with a different cultural background in need of mental health services. We need to be prepared to provide proactive and appropriate interventions that align with clients cultural preferences and values. In this talk you will learn and explore different multicultural interventions and approaches  from a person center and overall wellness perspective that will provide you with tools to increase multicultural awareness and sensitivity in your practice.

    KEY LEARNING POINTS

    • The importance of having multicultural awareness and sensitivity in your practice

    • How to genuinely listen to the client and ask questions to identify cultural preferences that promote rapport and treatment adherence.

    • How to increase awareness of your own cultural background, customs, bias and attitudes.

    • Explore case scenarios where being multiculturally aware has been helpful in client recovery and overall wellness.
