Austin AMFT is particularly interested in presenting topics that are viewed through a systemic lens and that focus on how the work impacts the family system, community, or sociocultural spheres. Topics may be geared toward work with individuals, families or couples.

      Show Your Work: Cultivating Confident Ethical Dispositions through Methodology

      PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

      This presentation highlights the ethical gaps found in many graduate programs and practices. According to the theory of the Well-lit Room, it is our ethical duty to practice as if our decisions are being watched under the spotlight. Unethical decisions are rarely made in isolation. The presenter will engage participants in dialogue about ethical decision-making in some of the stickiest ethical dilemmas. The goal is to cultivate an empowered and confident ethical disposition.


      KEY LEARNING POINTS

        • Identify and apply appropriate ethical decision-making methodologies
        • Cultivate an ethical disposition that promotes the welfare of client/relational system and represents the field professionally
        • Develop ethical clinical documentation strategies
        • Engage in objective, professional dialogue about ethical decision-making


        SPEAKER BIO

        Dr. Robyn Flores is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and supervisor in Texas, Missouri, and Colorado, as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor and approved clinical supervisor in Colorado and Nevada. She is an AAMFT supervisor candidate and is the owner/director of two small training-based group practices that focus on ethical best practices and the cultivation of professional identity. She is currently overseeing the AAMFT Code of Ethics revision project as consultant to AAMFT attorneys, chair of an 8-member task force. Dr. Flores has a heart for clients at the intersection of marginalized neurotypes and erotic marginalization in sexual expression and practice. She is a professor at Texas A&M University Commerce and University of the Cumberlands, teaching doctoral ethics, research, and assisting with a neuroanatomy post-doc certification program. She also teaches masters-level basic skills and diagnosis/treatment.

          Invisible Grief: Understanding Perinatal Grief And Loss, Client Impact, and Best Practices For Compassionate Care

          PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

          Perinatal grief and loss can have profound and lasting impacts on individuals and families. This session will explore the emotional, psychological, and relational effects of perinatal loss on clients, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death. Participants will gain insight into the unique nature of this type of grief, common responses, and the role of cultural and personal factors. Participants will also gain insight on best practices and tools used for providing therapeutic care for clients experiencing perinatal grief and loss.


          KEY LEARNING POINTS

          • Identify the unique psychological and relational impacts of perinatal grief and loss on clients, including how these experiences may manifest in clinical settings.
          • Apply trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches to support clients navigating perinatal loss.
          • Integrate evidence-based therapeutic interventions that promote emotional processing and long-term healing in clients experiencing perinatal bereavement.


          BIOGRAPHY

          Neasel Conner is a Licensed Professional Counselor and speaker from Austin, Texas and owner of Beyond the Happy. In her private practice, she has supported hundreds of people as they navigate grief, anxiety, depression, relationship issues and other life challenges. Neasel believes that life is more than just about achieving a "happily ever after" and that we have the power to rewrite our stories. With over 15 years of experience working with business professionals and educators, she is passionate about helping people realize their potential while prioritizing their mental health and wellness. Neasel Conner is the lead facilitator for the perinatal grief and loss groups for the non-profit Hearts 2 Heal. Neasel Conner has also presented to over 4,000 people all over the world with her dynamic, interactive, and engaging Beyond the Happy Vision Board Experiences. Some of her clients include Google, The United States Air Force, Black Girls Do Engineer, Northside ISD, and Region 2 Education Service Centers.

            Assessment for Neurodivergent Adults

            Amy Blackmon, Ph.D.



            PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

            Many adults with Autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent features have never been identified. This can affect performance at school and work, and quality of life. Assessment can differentiate neurological and psychiatric concerns, and offer recommendations for therapy, interpersonal relations, school, and the work place. This presentation will explain how assessment works, and who and why it helps.


            KEY LEARNING POINTS

              • How does neuropsychological assessment work?

              • What causes a person to be neurodivergent?

              • What can be recommended for neurodivergent people to improve their lives?


              BIOGRAPHY

              Dr. Blackmon completed a bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Rice University and three postgraduate degrees at Yale University, including a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. She completed American Psychological Association Division 40 training in Neuropsychology, including a clinical internship at the South Texas Veterans Health Care Center in San Antonio and a postdoctoral fellowship at a post-acute brain injury and psychiatric rehabilitation facility in central Texas.

              Dr. Blackmon is licensed in Texas and has worked in private practice, teaching, hospital, and rehabilitation settings in Austin since 2001. She provides in-person assessment in her northwest Austin office, as well as online assessment when appropriate. She has Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) through PSYPACT, allowing her to provide telehealth to clients in states that participate in PSYPACT. Dr. Blackmon is a certified Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist (ASDCS).
